LIGHT BULB APPROVED BY CONGRESS HAS HIGHER RATING

During the past year Congress outlawed the incandescent light bulb and replaced it with the low energy fluorescent bulb.  This law takes effect in the next year or so.  No longer will we have the 60-75-100 Watt bulbs that we burn in our light fixtures and table lamps.  Instead the longer lasting and lower energy using, less light producing bulb will be used.  When Congress approved this replacement bulb, the only consideration must have been energy usage per bulb.

Congress failed to consider that it takes two or three of the new bulb to replace one of the old bulb.  But, if the light fixture will only take one bulb, such as many canister lights, the room will be considerably dimmer than it was with the old incandescent bulb.  As dismal as this bulb will prove to be, in a recent informal, limited survey, it was rated slightly higher than the approval level of Congress which is less than 20%.

After the new bulb was made law there were Congressional hearings broadcast on CSPAN where several Congressmen discussed the big mistake Congress had made in passing this law.  They failed to consider disposal of the bulb when it burns out or if it is  dropped and breaks into many pieces.

Listening to these Congressmen describe disposal of these bulbs was quite eye opening. Each bulbs container must have instructions regarding the hazardous nature of the bulb and the required procedures for disposal.  Apparently the bulbs contain mercury.  If the bulb breaks, procedures require using a face mask and gloves and that the bulb remains be placed in an unbreakable container, so the contents cannot leak out.  Special instructions are required for disposition of a burnt out bulb as well.  How many people do you think are following these procedures?  The next problem will be figuring out how to clean up the contamination of waste disposal areas.

Not only do the bulbs cost more than the old incandescent bulb, they really don’t last as long, as claimed, and it takes more of them to produce the desired level of light.  In addition to the affects of hazardous materials, the lack of needed light to do leisure reading may well result in eye strain and loss of eye sight.

To top it all off, most of these new bulbs are made in China.  Why isn’t this a surprise? First it was poisonous dog food and now its poisonous light bulbs.
